CLOCKSS is an international project aimed at creating a closed access archive to preserve orphaned and at risk digital publications across all disciplines in locally centred repositories.

CLOCKSS focuses on preserving digital resources at risk of permanent loss from several types of “trigger events”; for example, journal closure, publisher closure, unavailability of back issues, or catastrophic failure of publishing sites. CLOCKSS ensures digital publications affected by trigger events will remain available through the University of Edinburgh Library or through CLOCKSS’ own online repository.
For researchers, CLOCKSS provides assurance that:
- Your own digital publications, past and future will remain available to ensure continued access and impact
- Digital publications you need for research will remain available for free
- Digital publications on coursework reading lists will remain available
- Industry colleagues can access publications via the CLOCKSS website which is both centralised and internationally acclaimed
Free or paid for:
CLOCKSS is free for researchers at the University of Edinburgh to access via the library. Triggered content (content that is no longer available via any publisher) is available for free to everyone here:
Free ContentLibraries and publishers can join CLOCKSS for a fee that is based on their current budgets or revenues.
